Mae Hong Son is about 350 kilometres from Chiang Mai. But whether you drive or take a bus, it's a long, long ride since the roads must snake through the mountains that stand between the two provinces.

People with limited time may opt for plane. Regular flights to Mae Hong Son are available from several airlines, both from Bangkok and from Chiang Mai.
